Chocolate Series

Once again I’m behind in updating the Blog with recent trips and I have several to catch up on, starting with the fantastic Chocolate Series that I completed back at the beginning of  July. This is the second series set by The Cache and Cake Club consisting of 23 caches over a distance of  4 miles located on the Oxordshire / Berkshire border south of Wantage & Didcot.

Great Views

I took Pip the Geohound out with me today for this series which started from a little car park at the top of Hendred Down. The circular walk took us over the Downs towards ‘Lands End’ then back up via the Isley Downs Riding Route where there were some great views. The return stretch along the Ridgeway takes in Scutchamers Knob, which is an early Iron Age round barrow and for those that are interested in Trig Points, then you will pass Fore Down pillar (S5826). Cache 17 is placed by a memorial stone to Penelope Betjeman located at an excellent view point.

Peaceful

There was a good variety of caches and they came along in quick succession  and all of were all easy to find, except cache 1 where we dnf’d, but it had actually gone missing and has subsequently been replaced by the CO. Pip was pleased that there were no stiles or gates to negotiate also making it a good series for bikes as well as being set out on restricted byways.

I found the paths and route is well marked although I got a little confused at cache 10. There is just one 200 meter stretch of quiet road just after cache 9, but we could have walked along the grass verge if necessary, but it wasn’t today.  Pip the Geohound really enjoyed the the walk particularly as there were no cattle along the route! However, if it’s a hot day take plenty of water for dogs as well as yourself as there are no natural sources on route. Highly Recommended.
