S&M Series 1 & 2

S&M Series 1 & 2, 51 Caches, 12 Miles, Hampshire

First in Series 1: GC47B5W Walked: 10/05/2013
First in Series 2: GC4A0GH Walked: 10/05/2013

Today I walked both S&M series which are located near Andover in Hampshire, 12 miles in total, each series is about 6 miles each.  Looking at the weather forecast before hand I worked out that I had a potential window between 10am and 5pm in order to avoid the rain. Series 1, began at Weyhill and went West to Fyfield, then south bypassing Thruxton, through East Cholderton to Monxton and then back to Weyhill.

The first bit of the walk took us along the Fyfield Road, I didn’t like this so much as it was quite narrow and surprisingly busy, but we were soon into the countryside which I much preferred.  Just before the village of East Cholderton the trail gets very close to the very busy and noisy A303 but we soon pass this section and walk through the lovely village almost entirely made up of thatched cottages.

From East Cholderton we headed up hill and around a ridge with some nice views and memorial seat which would make a good spot for a picnic.  The next village on our route was Monxton. It is a very picturesque village and along the main road there is a long row of thatched cottages with the Black Swan pub at the end (main photo above). There is a church micro cache near St Mary’s which was rebuilt in 1853 and a there is a nice little river with crystal clear water running beside the village green. This was my favorite part of the walk.  From Monxton we made our way back  along a byway that eventually took us once again under the A303 and back to Weyhill.  A very pleasant series, with some tricky caches within the mix.

After, lunch we drove 1o minutes down the road to Amport another picturesque village (pictured above) I had a bit of difficulty finding the first footpath as it wasn’t very well sign posted and I ended up in someones back garden at one point.  We headed south along a footpath/track known as Hook lane, along here there were some good displays of Bluebells in the wooded areas that were just coming out.  I also noticed the first yellow field of rapeseed, horrible stuff.

The track turned into a road that lead under the railway line and up to chicken farm, which was a little bit pongy when the wind was in the wrong direction.  After a further short bit of track the trail turned northward and lead us back along a long road section towards Amport, the roads were quiet with only the occasional car to worry about. The sky went very dark and I was half expecting for the heavens to open but, I was lucky and we escaped with a light shower.   The final leg took us along Furzedown lane passing a riding centre and the back of Amport House.  Amport House home of the Armed Forces Chaplaincy Centre (AFCC). After a few more caches we returned the large village green which marked the end of the series.
