The Nuddsy Mega Ramble was originally made up of 32 caches but only 27 are still active due to a few having to be archived because of issues with the land owner. The loop starts on the edge of Shrewsbury town and follows a made path along a section of the Shropshire Way which is popular with local walkers and cyclists.

The route goes through several woods that owned by the Forestry Commission, firstly Haughmond Hill, then The Hollies and finally Abbey Wood.  As you walk through the woods you are surrounded by several hundred large ancient trees.   The dead mans chest cache is located in the middle just below the ridge of a steep sided hill, it’s a tough climb but worth it.

The path through Abbey Wood provides an excellent view of the extensive remains of the  Augustinian Haughmond Abbey ruins which is maintained by English Heritage.  The trail then leaves the woodland for open countryside and at no.17 you can take a slight detour to Sundorne Castle. John Corbet built the building in 1766 and in the early 1800’s he turned it into a castle like country home, it was eventually demolished in the 1950’s but there are still some remains worth seeing.

The trail then heads back through Dell Farm after which the is a short gap in the caches until you cross the main road and enter Battlefield where you will find a few more caches. From no.28, the route follows along a green strip of land between houses and some industrial units to bring you back to the car, beware of muggles along here.

I was camping at the Shrewsbury Showground so it wasn’t far to travel to start the walk. I parked in the fitness centre car park then headed down the country lane to this one. A nice quick find to get started.

I normally have my geohound with me but I was on my own today, shame as she is good cover when I need to stop along the way. I was following behind a muggle so we were going very slowly. Quick find here.

I crossed the road into Haughman Hill, I couldn’t believe that this hadn’t been logged since last year, amazing considering the location.

Continued the stroll through the narrow strip of woodland being passed by some mountain bikers going up the hill. A nice quick find and the cache was in excellent condition.
